One fine morning, Elspeth sat upon the porch, soaking up the sunny rays and enjoying the warmth. It was not too hot or cold, but she had the misfortune of watching her children run around and play on the lawn. So innocent and full of life, she thought, unaware of the real dangers in the world. She began to think to herself what it would be like to cut them open, what sounds would they make, and how long it would take them to die.

(No. . . .) she thought. (. . . Don’t think like that! They’re your own children!)

While they played amongst each other, she looked off into the forest surrounding them. She was curious—she wanted to explore more of the prison in the day and really get a good look. She quietly snuck off without the kids noticing her and wandered around the castle toward the forest. She located the trap door with ease, but as she was about to open it, she glanced off into the distance and immediately, caught sight of an opening. Making sure her children had not noticed her absence, she decided to explore a bit and see what it was.

Maybe it was another torture chamber? Perhaps an add-on to the prison? Maybe the indigenous still inhabited the island? She ventured through the opening and was rather surprised to see a graveyard. Overgrown grass made it look abandoned, but the names on the gravestones were still legible.

She looked around, noticing the dates of death, and realizing these people were alive during Rylus’s time. Were these his nobleman and noblewomen? His servants? At the end of the graveyard was a small, square mausoleum, and she wondered with a racing heart if this was John Rylus’s resting place. His body was never found, but was it possible he hid it in plain sight?

She opened the door and curiously descended the spiraling stone steps. She did not have a trace of fear in her heart. At the bottom was a stone slab, but she could open it with ease. Inside was a tomb with sarcophagi lined up against each wall facing each other. There were no names carved anywhere, which was odd, and then, she wondered if these were empty coffins. As she began to observe them, she realized the lids were not even detachable—they were carved as a whole piece, strangely enough.

“Odd,” she said to herself.

“. . . Elspeth. . . .” She faintly heard.

It sounded like a voice in the breeze, fainter than a whisper. There were no cracks or openings down here, so it was impossible for it to be wind.

“Hello?” she called out, mildly alarmed.

“. . . Elspeth. . . .”

She turned, facing the wall opposite the door. She knew positively it was where the voice came from. She cautiously approached it and placed her head against the stone.

“Hello?”

“. . . Come to me. . . .”

The voice was ever so faint, but she knew she could hear its lustful cadence. She stepped away and observed the wall, but it looked ordinary.
